Gorgeous weather greeted us this Mother’s Day Sunday at Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY. Numerous people in the park were already walking, running, and biking from the early hours. Stefan put out all control flags, Anna Bekker and Co put together a tent and set up registration tables, and we were ready to go with our orienteering event. Navigation games consisted of four courses, appropriate for all levels. It was a great deal of fun to run amongst the city folk but not following the typical running paths. Courses went through beautiful parts of the park and if you had time, a large group of turtles of various sizes was visible from one of the control flags.
People of different backgrounds showed up to compete but majority was of Russian-speaking origins. Many friends and orienteers came to commemorate Anna’s late husband, Mark Bekker, an orienteer and a great man. It is in his honor this event is being held every year at Prospect Park and it is to him we are thankful for this day. Food was shared following the competition and in all respects this was a great event. Thank you all for coming.
