Training Director’s Report
About 36 turned out to brave the remaining snow and raw weather for Spring Training at Mountaim Lakes Park on May 26th.
Thankfully the rain held off and it was wet only underfoot.
This was truly a training event with some competitors moving up a notch to try the longer courses, with mixed success.
It was a bare bones event, chose a course, pay for the map, sign the waiver and go. The all in price of $3 included map and loan of SI stick.
Special mention to newcomers (to HVO) Derek Madsen and Marley Fernandez who persevered on the red course to finish all controls (nearly 3 hours!) and to Tom Svobodny who made the most of his trip by doing both Red and Brown.
Thanks to Craig for help in setting out the controls and to Ksenvyia, Peter, Craig and Greg for pick up.
Don’t forget then first full event of 2017 next Saturday (April 1st) at Westmoreland. This is the annual 3 for 1 – do 1,2 or 3 courses for one price. As usual Westmoreland prizes will be a bit more than normal ($10 for member – includes SI stick) but the excellency of the courses will be worth it! See HVO website or see http://www.westmorelandsanctuary.org/event/explore-the-sanctuary-a-treasure-hunt-in-the-woods/?event_date=2017-04-01 for more details.
Instruction will be provided for beginners.

Because of expected heavy snow on Tuesday and probability that it will not thaw before the weekend the Spring Opener Training meet at Mountain Lakes will be postponed for one week and a day until Sunday March 26th. Hopefully there will be some snow melt before then. There will be a Red (6.5k), Brown (4.2k) and yellow (2.8k) course. Other details remain the same.
Time to brush off the winter cobwebs and get the compass out again.
HVO will be holding a winter training meet at Mountain Lakes (North Salem) on March 18th. Starts from 10.30 to 12.30.
This will be a bare bones event – two courses (Red and Brown), no registration – just sign the waiver, buy the map ($3) punch start and go and have fun. We will have a splits printer at the finish so that you can see and compare how you fared but no formal results.
SI sticks will be available for rent $2. Bring your own refreshments.
The entrance to the Park is at 201 Hawley Rd, North Salem, NY 10560. Then follow signs.
To give an idea on map numbers please email Geof at ghckat @ yahoo.com if you think you might attend.
