This northern New Jersey event will utilize the decades-unused Ramapo Lake (Ramapo Mtn SF) area, accessed in the southwest, from Back Beach Park in Wanaque, Passaic County, NJ.
The southwestern part of the Ramapo Lake map (circa 1988) was digitized and updated, for a November 2017 event. The map is called Wanaque Ridge.
For more information on the map and terrain, you can read Bob R’s DVOA e-Board post here (scroll down to “Advanced Course setter…”).

NOTE for large groups (scouts, JROTC, etc.): In order to assure that enough maps are printed, we request that large groups (12 or more persons) planning to attend contact the Registrar no later than noon on Friday, October 12.
We’re planning to have a Harry Potter Trivia-O as an option on the Yellow Long course. Tentatively, it will be limited to books 3 (Prisoner of Azkaban) and 4 (Goblet of Fire). Results will be used in the Dual Event Scoring, but you will have to finish your orienteering competition course first, in order to contribute to scoring both as an orienteer and Harry Potter trivia wiz.
So, better bone-up on Hippogriffs and Quidditch World Cups, if you want to prove your HP prowess at Wanaque Ridge! (Please note that the floo network will not be available for this event, though portkeys are acceptable.)
Anyway, back to the rest of the event info…

How to get there
From I-287, north or south, take Exit 55 for Cty Rte 511 / Ringwood Ave, then head north on 511/Ringwood. Proceed past the only center-of-town traffic signal (at 2nd Ave, CVS on corner); after 2 more blocks, turn right onto 4th Ave (Mobil — formerly Exxon — station on far corner).
Proceed about 1/4 mi, then, at the stop sign, turn left to continue on 4th Ave. Proceed about another 1/4 mi, as 4th Ave meanders a bit, to Back Beach Dr; take a slight right there to proceed into the park.
Google Maps – Use “Back Beach Park, Wanaque” as destination.
NOTE: GoogleMaps might say that 4th Ave continues into the park; it actually veers left at Back Beach Dr.
There should be orienteering signs, as well as “Back Beach Park” signs, to help you get there.
HVO/DVOA Dual Event Scoring
Points will be assigned on each course for the top 3 men and top 3 women from each club plus the top 3 groups on White and Yellow. 1 through 6 points are assigned: 6 for 1st place, 5 for 2nd, and so on. If there are less than 3 finishers from one of the clubs on a course, those points will not be assigned. To figure in the results, your club must be declared on your registration card!
Please note that results of the Yellow Short course will only be used to break a tie. Yellow Long will include the Harry Potter Trivia-O, for which only 1st and 2nd place will be used for scoring. After finishing, HVO & DVOA participants can choose whether they wish their run on Yellow Long to count for regular orienteering or for the Trivia-O; you cannot choose both. However, the course must be completed (no MPs or DNFs) in order for your HP wizardry result to count.
